The One-man Santlaland Diaries, Which is Totally Not for Kids, Returns to Classic Theatre of San Antonio

It’s that time of year again — Hallmark Christmas movies are being broadcast wall-to-wall and carols are piped out of tinny speakers in every public space imaginable. If this is enough to make you batty, you’re certainly not alone.

In his early 30s, much to his chagrin, David Sedaris found himself working as an elf in a Macy’s Santaland display. He chronicled his experience in the sardonic essay The Santaland Diaries, which propelled him into the public eye after its 1992 broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition, and was later adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello.

The Classic Theatre has made it a holiday tradition of their own to host John Stillwagon’s performance of the one-man show, and if you’re hankering for something a bit more naughty this Christmas season, this is the show for you. If it’s not obvious by now, leave the kiddos at home — not only is Santa debearded, but anyone familiar with Sedaris will tell you his material is not suited for innocent ears.
