All the new chain restaurants calling San Antonio home within the next year

We love locally owned dining spots as much as the person, but there's nothing wrong with occasionally enjoying a reliable, even predictable, meal at a chain restaurant.

The Alamo City is already a hotbed for restaurant chains, and plenty more have announced plans to expand here. Here's a collection of dining chains that entered San Antonio for the first time recently or unveiled plans to come here soon.

Hawaiian Bros Island Grill

The Aloha state’s iconic cuisine is now available for San Antonio residents via its first area location in Selma. Earlier this fall, Kansas City-based Hawaiian Bros Island Grill opened its doors to fans of the Big Island’s famous cuisine in a fast casual dining atmosphere.

Kura Sushi

The highly anticipated wait for SA’s first conveyor-belt sushi bar, Kura, came to an end earlier this year. The sushi bar located at the Quarry is now up and running serving their famed sushi, ramen and desserts. Kura’s expansion into San Antonio marks the ninth store the Japan-based restaurant has in Texas.

Dave's Hot Chicken

The L.A.-based chain plans to open eight stores in the Alamo City, ensuring residents never drive too far to experience their cayenne pepper-loaded hot chicken. However, for those who are spice-averse, Dave’s offers a no-spice alternative to its famous fried chicken. The first of multiple planned Dave’s locations in SA is slated to open in December 2022.

Maple Street Biscuit Co.

Florida-based chain Maple Street Biscuit Co. specializes in hearty breakfast and lunch offerings such as biscuits topped with fried chicken, bacon and gravy. It will make its Texas debut with two confirmed locations in San Antonio: one at the Quarry Village and one in the Alamo Ranch area.

SweetGreen

LA-based salad chain SweetGreen will open its debut San Antonio location in the Quarry Market next spring. This chic spot is known for delicious salad bowls with a high standard for freshness — fresh produce is delivered daily. According to company officials, the chain collaborates with creameries and farms near its restaurants, prioritizing organic, regenerative and local sourcing.

Black Bear Diner

Black Bear Diner, which offers patrons an easygoing and family-friendly familial atmosphere, opened its first San Antonio location earlier this year at 2707 S.E. Military Dr. The California-based food chain — which focuses on serving large portions of classic breakfast, lunch and dinner options — is planning two additional locations in San Antonio in the coming year.

The Cookshack

Fort Worth-based chicken chain The Cookshack’s new Selma storefront is part of the company’s rapid expansion across Texas. The restaurant grew in popularity due to its spicy chicken, which comes in five distinct heat levels ranging from Not Hot to AMF. According to the business’s website, the chicken patrons can expect options like ribs, salads, tacos and chicken-and-waffle plates.

Nékter Juice Bar

SoCal-based juice chain Nékter Juice Bar is San Antonio’s newest spot for top-of-the-line smoothies, açaí bowls or freshly pressed juice. The award-winning juice bar concept opened its first San Antonio storefront in Alamo Heights last summer, and now has two San Antonio locations.

Bojangles

In June 2022, North Carolina chain Bojangles announced that San Antonio would be among the many Texas cities in its Lone Star State expansion. According to MySA, San Antonio will see its first chicken and biscuit giant located on 8610 Potranco Road, per a recent filing with the TDLR. The construction was set to begin Dec. 1, with a completion date of Spring 2023.

Twin Peaks

While San Antonio residents have many Twin Peaks locations to choose from, the chain’s newest foray claims to offer a different feel. The Live Oak location features bar fare with everyone in mind, from rare bourbons to clarified cocktails. Additionally, the location will feature a cozy fireplace to relax and unwind and, erm, take in the view.

Chicken Salad Chick

Atlanta-based chain Chicken Salad Chick is prevalent in the south and boasts over 205 restaurants across 17 states. The company plans to open two San Antonio locations, one in Stone Oak and one on the Far West Side.

Salad & Go

Arizona-based drive-thru chain Salad and Go filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to begin construction on their $300,000 site in Stone Oak. Construction on the 900-square-foot site was set to begin in November, with an expected completion date of Spring 2023.

Seattle-based Teriyaki Madness specializes in Asain-fusion cuisine, offering customers staples like pork katsu, made-to-order teriyaki bowls and appetizers such as egg rolls, pot stickers and edamame.
