The Canción Cannibal Cabaret

In conjunction with Trinity University’s Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS) program and its Álvarez Seminar (a series combining lectures, readings, performances, films and workshops), Tejana poet and playwright Amalia Ortiz presents a selection of excerpts from her poetry and song collection The Canción Cannibal Cabaret. Inspired by the current political climate and issues of social injustice, the experimental project fuses elements of radio plays and concept albums into what’s described as “a refugee, POC, feminist, LGBTQ call to action.” A theater arts instructor at SAY Sí who was recently named Artpace’s inaugural performing artist resident, Ortiz has appeared on HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and her book Rant. Chant. Chisme. earned the 2015 Writers’ League of Texas Poetry Discovery Prize.
