Two widely reviled figures topped the Current's list of this week's most-read stories: U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and NBA commentator Charles Barkley.

Cruz has been in news lately over a controversial distribution deal for his podcast that critics charge he's using to skirt federal campaign finance laws. Meanwhile, Barkley is once again trolling San Antonio sports fans over their love of fattening foods, including churros.

Button-pushing jokes and controversial hot takes have long been part of Barkley's brand, so it's hard to believe the NBA great — long known for the size of his own waistline — is actually serious about his jabs at SA.

On the other hand, Cruz's podcast deal could result in some serious complications. At least one high-profile advertiser has bailed from the program, two watchdog groups filed a formal complaint with the Federal Elections Commission over the pact and its a sure bet U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, the Democrat running for his senate seat, is already working to weaponize the controversy.
