A fortress-like San Antonio home designed by a structural engineer is for sale

A distinctive brick-exterior home designed by an award-winning structural engineer with both style and durability in mind is now on the market for $675,000.

The late Rodney Wayne Ludwig and his wife had the three-bedroom, two-bath residence built in 1975 in the Forest Oak enclave near MacArthur Park. Ludwig's exacting specifications included few exterior windows and extensive use of hardwoods, including teak double doors at the entry, pecan wall panels and Karpawood parquet floors. Eleven sliding glass doors are arranged throughout the flat-roofed structure.

A Midcentury Modern feel — lots of clean lines and right angles — pervades throughout the interior, which includes a master suite with its own sitting room with a balcony. The living area, created with acoustic design in mind, boasts a 23-foot ceiling that gives it the feel of church designed for a congregation of architects.

"It's a unique piece," said Larry Ludwig, the former owner's son. "My father obviously had an eye toward Frank Lloyd Wright. He liked sharp angles. He also built everything to last."

The younger Ludwig spent some $70, 000 getting the home ready for market, including adding a new roof, refinishing the Karpawood floors, updating the kitchen appliances, painting and doing electrical upgrades, according to the listing.
