An Asian-inspired home owned by the family behind San Antonio's Dailey Liquors is for sale

A historic home that got a Japanese-style makeover in the 1950s by the owners of San Antonio's Dailey Liquors chain has hit the market for $625,000.

The Monticello Park house was constructed in 1928 by builder A.B. Walton, according people familiar with the property. At that point, the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath property was nicknamed "The Alamo" due to a distinctive facade and roofline which mirrored the profile of the downtown Spanish Mission.

However, that facade — and, indeed, the whole home — underwent a major transformation after Charles and Sammy Dailey of Dailey Liquors fame bought the residence in the 1950s. Interested in capturing Asian design aesthetics, Sammy, a visual artist, worked with local architect Phil Lloyd Shoop to impart a distinctive feel where traditional Japanese met Midcentury Modern.

The redesign augmented the 10-foot ceilings and oak wood floors of the original home with elements including sleek maple paneling and pocket-style shoji screens separating rooms. It also boosted the dwelling's square footage to nearly 2,800 square feet.

The den, added to the house during the remodel, includes beamed 12-foot cathedral ceilings, a massive fireplace and an elaborate terrazzo tile floor. Meanwhile, the kitchen and dining room area include retro touches such as Hoosier cabinets with fluted glass fronts and a built-in buffet with a quartz counter.

This house is listed by Gina Candelario with Kuper Sotheby's International Realty.
