Alfred Hitchcock was riding high in 1956. In the last two years, he’d had hits with Dial M for Murder, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief and become a TV star on his own anthology series. He decided to fashion a bigger, bolder color remake of his 1934 film about a couple who get mixed up in an assassination plot. Their vacation goes sour in a classic “knife in the back” scene, and then it’s one darn thing after another. The stars: James Stewart of Rear Window, and a queen of the pop charts and box office, Doris Day, introducing the Oscar-winning song that became her signature tune, “Que Sera Sera.” The recurring collaborators: writer John Michael Hayes, who’d done Dial M and Rear Window, and composer Bernard Herrmann, seen conducting the concert at Royal Albert Hall in a tour-de-force climax where the suspense is literally orchestrated to music. Catch it at TPR’s Cinema Tuesday series on June 6.
