In a field that doesn’t offer many opportunities for mainstream crossover, drag diva Coco Peru (AKA Clinton Leupp) has made quite a mark. In addition to appearing (almost always as Coco Peru) in gay-themed movies like Girls Will Be Girls (as an actress who’s in love with her abortion doctor and continues practicing unsafe sex in hopes of seeing him again), Trick (with Tori Spelling in the lead), Straight Jacket, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and television shows Arrested Development and Will and Grace, the gender illusionist loaned his chirpy voice to the 2006 animated Disney feature The Wild (as “Mama Hippo,” naturally). If you’ve never seen Leupp in character, picture a severe redhead à la Bree Van de Kamp of Wisteria Lane — only with a filthy mouth and a wickedly dark sense of humor. Leupp’s one-woman shows incorporate satirical songs and stand-up comedy and have titles such as “My Goddamn Cabaret” and “Miss Coco Peru: A Legend in Progress,” and have been performed in such exotic locales as a yacht in the Mediterranean and a nudist camp in the mountains of Malibu. General admission: $25-$30, VIP (includes meet and greet after the show): $35-$40, 8pm, the Josephine Theater, 329 West Josephine, for advance tickets visist cocoperutakesontexas.com. Age 21 and up only.
