Hill Country Deco: Modernistic Architecture of Central Texas

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-19

This Friday, Museo Alameda is hosting an after-hours reading and book signing in the museum lobby of Hill Country Deco: Modernistic Architecture of Central Texas by Texas history fanatics David Bush and Jim Parsons. Both authors have worked with the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and have the professional chops to critically assemble this image-driven folio depicting the evolution of Art Deco, Art Moderne, and WPA Deco styles in Central Texas architecture. Highlights include the Alameda Theater in San Antonio, currently being restored to its over-the-top Art Moderne splendor; Austin’s WPA-deco U.S. Court House; and San Antonio’s Express-News building, an exemplar of what many people imagine when they hear the words “Art Deco.” The authors discuss various aspects of historic preservation, considering some structures that have had the fortune to maintain their integrity and others that are now mere rumors of their original glory. Free, 6:30pm, Museo Alameda, 101 South Santa Rosa, (210) 299-4300, thealameda.org.
