Uber Wants to Build an Army

Uber says it has already met its goal of signing up 2,000 drivers in San Antonio, but now it wants 8,000 more.

The company will announce its goal for the next year at Brooks City Base late Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for the company says part of that expansion includes attracting more military members to the uberMILITARY program. Right now, the company has more than 600 service members that drive for it.

Uber returned to San Antonio in October, after finally accepting a compromise with the city regarding background checks. Now, drivers for Uber and Lyft can voluntarily get the background check, becoming verified by the city. Lyft started operating again in December, and both companies are on nine-month pilot programs.

The two transportation network companies are no longer alone in operation, either. The hybrid rideshare, delivery company Get Me is conducting driver orientations right now in preparation of its January 14 launch.

A spokesperson for Get Me says the company is encouraging its drivers to become verified by the city via fingerprint background checks.
