Music is the lifeblood of drummer and singer Sheila E.’s family — perhaps that’s why she dropped her surname to make a run at stardom. Her father and uncle, Peter and Coke Escovedo, are career percussionists for Santana and founded the big band Azteca, while her uncle is San Anto legend Alejandro Escovedo. Oh, and she was engaged to Prince when she played on some of the sex god’s best records. Leading her own band, Sheila E. knocked out a few classic singles (“A Love Bizarre” and “The Glamorous Life”) that blended freestyle rhythms and deliciously cheesy ’80s pop.
