The late Maureen O’Hara always considered this movie her favorite among the nearly sixty films she starred in, and John Wayne was her favorite co-star. In the film, Wayne plays Sean Thornton, an Irish-American boxer who returns to his homeland after a tragedy in the ring. He falls for Mary Kate Danaher (O’Hara); her stubborn insistence that he court her in a proper Irish manner is just one roadblock on the way toward married bliss. “The Quiet Man” won two Academy Awards, for Best Director (John Ford) and Best Color Cinematography. The film was shot on location in Ireland, and was close to the hearts of all involved. A family affair, John Ford’s daughter Barbara helped edit the film, Maureen O’Hara’s younger brothers both had roles in the film, as did John Wayne’s children. 130 minutes, Not Rated.
