"Traditional Plants and Healing" Staff Pick

When: Sat., May 13, 10 a.m. 2017
Price: Free
Long before the onset of medical technology, indigenous groups relied on the healing powers of herbs and plants, along with ceremonial prayer and practice. These holistic means of medicine evolved throughout the centuries, but remained true to traditional spirit. Curanderismo, a Latin American healing system, involves indigenous beliefs and rituals that have been used throughout history and is still being taught today. This system maintains the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of health by combining the medicinal use of plants and instinctive realm of the spirit. Jane Madrigal, a local Xicana artist, is a firm believer in the power of plants and mindfulness of the Earth and all living things. With her artwork rooted in indigenous and religious iconography, Madrigal reflects her Mexican heritage and aims to advocate for the social injustices suffered by her people. Living by a set of laws of interconnectedness, Madrigal hopes to inspire the San Antonio community to reconnect with the natural world and our ancestors, and through reconnection, to see the limitless value of our planet.
