7 Places to Get Cajun/Creole Eats in SA

Mardi Gras is days away and we're hungry for something spicy. Test out these local spots and see if they have what it’s got when it comes to boudin, beignets, crawfish and King Cake.

Pronounced “LAN-yap,” Lagniappe Today Food Truck starts with bringing authentic Louisiana  cuisine and ends up giving SA a tasty menu with Jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, lobster mac and cheese and of course shrimp po’ boys. The truck was recently filmed for Cooking Channel's Eat St.

Acadiana Cafe (1289 SW Loop 410, (210) 674-0019

Acadiana Cafe’s cozy and down home decor is perfect if you plan on sitting with a pound, or three or five of boiled crawfish in a bucket. It might take you awhile. Acadiana has safer dishes like fried catfish or red beans and rice but you could go with alligator strips as an appetizer or even the spicy cajun nachos so yummy they could be a meal on their own.

Where Y’ At Food Truck (Mobile, (210) 420-0090)

Stuffed Shrimp po’ boys, beignets covered in powdered sugar and barbeque shrimp are just some of the N’awlins specialities you’ll find in the Where Y’ At Food Truck. The truck will start serving up crawfish boils every Tuesday in March. Chef-owner Pieter Sypesteyn also takes orders for custom King Cake.

Nadler's Bakery (1621 Babcock, (210) 340-1021)

If you're hoping to land a traditional almond-filled King Cake to celebrate Mardi Gras, Nadler's Bakery is currently taking orders. The cakes come in 9 inches, 8-by-12 inches and 12-by-16 inches at $14.20, $25.20, $37.90.

Crawdad's Sports Bar & Grill (12333 West, (210) 314-2336)

The newly opened Crawdads holds crayfish boils every Saturday during crayfish season, which usually runs from March through June.

Rackspace employees know what's up. These giant po'boy's are insane and worth every penny. The teensy restaurant also serves up steamy "swamp stew" with blue crab, crawfish and shrimp and a rich tomato gravy.

Lüke is having a Mardi Gras party on fat Tuesday March 4 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. An extended happy hour will feature drinks like the hurricane cocktail and Abita beers on tap. Chef John Russ is serving up hot boiled crawfish, shrimp etouffee, andouille jambalaya, fried chicken wings and of course king cake.

Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen (1816 N New Braunfels, (210) 226-2200)

Per reader submission, Ma Harper's has a stake on the soul/Creole/Cajun market. The menu also includes Creole fried platters, sandwiches and Nawlins favorites.
