"Altered States"

Hills Snyder, longtime arts lecturer at UTSA, former gallery director at Sala Diaz, artist, writer, curator, musician and so much more, is leaving San Antonio next year for Magdalena, New Mexico. He will be sorely missed in San Antonio’s arts and music communities, but before he goes he will share a new solo show, the fourth in his stunning travelogue/drawings series “Altered States.” Inspired by his travels, his personal/artistic quest to eff the ineffable and the power that subjectivity wields over sense of place, the work (and series) is at once dense and airy, simple and profound, playful and contemplative. Snyder shared the following statement about the exhibition with the Current: “When first I set out in May 2016 to ‘look for America,’ I did not know how [elusive] that ideal would become in the years closely following. With ‘Altered States’ I’ve attempted to write and draw my way toward some sort of reckoning. It means so very much to me that Patricia [Ruiz-Healy] has chosen to back the project (just as Justin, Ed and Anthony at FL!GHT and Glasstire did two years ago when the traveling exhibitions and serial narrative began). That she has framed it as a send-off to New Mexico only adds to my appreciation.”
