Grackle theater
For one night only, Buttercup is taking its beloved Grackle Mundy happenings to the theater. On Monday, September 12, the local art-pop quartet will host a performance at San Pedro Playhouse Cellar, a setting remarkably intimate even for a band that prides itself on breaking down conventional barriers between musicians and audiences. The group will also incorporate the stage props available at the theater and on-stage phone conversations (via the vintage rotary "Buttercup phone") into the show. The show will also include the inimitable bagpipes work of Rusty Hoke, one of the city's few active street musicians.
Because the Playhouse Cellar seats only about 60 people, the show looks like a guaranteed sellout. If you're interested in attending, you can purchase tickets for $6 in advance at the Playhouse box office, or by phone at 733-7528. Tickets will be $7 at the door.
Patio jams
The always-embattled San Antonio blues scene has received a boost in recent months from the San Antonio Blues Society's weekly Thursday night "Jam on the Patio" blowouts at Sam's Burger Joint. These jam sessions, featuring the SA Blues Cats and whoever happens to strap on an axe over the course of the night, run from 7 p.m. to midnight, with no cover charge.
Poker faces
Luna Fine Music Club, San Antonio's premiere jazz venue, recently joined the ongoing national poker craze (which includes ESPN Classic airing old poker tournaments next to legendary college-football games), and Bravo morphing from the Queer Eye Channel into the Celebrity Poker Channel) by hosting Texas Hold 'Em Sundays. These weekly events feature three tournaments a night (7, 9, and 11 p.m.), with sign-ups taking place 30 minutes in advance of each tournament. The club will give poker a rest on Labor Day weekend, but the chips will fly again on Sunday, September 11.
