Jim Hightower and "The Living Spirit of Texas Populism: In Our Politics, In Our Culture"

Release Date: 2010-04-28

Considered “America’s #1 populist,” best-selling author and syndicated political columnist Jim Hightower is famous for challenging the powers that be on behalf of the “Powers That Ought To Be,” including environmentalists, farmers, and “just plain folks.” The exhibition Swim Against the Current: Highlights from the Jim Hightower Archive was made possible by Hightower’s donation of 100 boxes of written material, photographs, and videos to Texas State University’s Wittliff Collections in San Marcos. To celebrate Hightower’s gift, the Wittliff is hosting a multi-tiered shindig titled “The Living Spirit of Texas Populism: In Our Politics, In Our Culture,” with progressive panel discussions, local food and drinks from St. Arnold’s Brewery and Cool Mint Café, a talk by Hightower himself, and live music by Jimmy LaFave, Carolyn Wonderland, and the Austin Lounge Lizards. Free, but space is limited. RSVP by calling (512) 245-2313 or emailing [email protected], 1-7pm, Alkek Library, 7th floor, Texas State University – San Marcos, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, thewittliffcollections.txstate.edu
