During the September 18 city council meeting, before the $2.4 billion Fiscal Year 2015 budget was approved, Mayor Ivy Taylor received thunderous applause from fire and police union members who packed the chambers.
The uniformed employees’ applause rose to decibel levels that echoed deeply.
The sound was one of strong support for Taylor, who confronted contentious collective bargaining negotiations between the unions and the City.
Enter City Manager Sheryl Sculley, whom presidents of the fire and police unions accuse of threatening, intimidating and alienating uniformed employees.
Police union president Mike Helle personally thanked Taylor for hitting the “reset” button.
“We’re all happy that you moved the agenda at the negotiating table from threats and intimidation to one of trust and appreciation. Through your leadership, mayor, you have created new opportunities for us to return to the bargaining table,” Helle said.
If that doesn’t make Taylor want to hit the “reset button” on her decision not to run for mayor in 2015, we’re not sure what will.
