2008 was a big year for Little, who went from waiting tables in Philadelphia to scoring a record deal and opening for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on their Raising Sand tour. Her debut album reveals the voice of an old soul steeped in influences ranging from Billie Holliday to Sheryl Crow.

Little resisted the temptation of being cast as a Britney-esque pop tart, holding out for a bluesy and jazzier direction. She prefers trains to planes, and lead single “Follow That Sound” has the vibe of a seeker on the road chasing that muse, while “Set You Free” has a mystical, curious quality.

“Try” delivers a bluesy stomp and “Spaceship” a swinging toe-tapper. “Peppermint & Glue” and “Love Fell” offer a more contemplative sound, in torchy ballads that feel drawn from a bygone era. Little’s old-school vibe makes it easy to see why Plant picked her to open last year’s tour. She opens for Jonny Lang in Austin on February 26, in Houston on the 27th, and Dallas on the 28th.
