Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2008-11-19

The Song and Dance
Ensemble of West Africa draws from rich musical traditions, incorporating elaborate visual ensembles, colorful and inventive costumes, graceful movement, and varied percussion instruments. The musicians use well-known African instruments such as the kora, djembe, and flute, but the African musical styles are mixed with Moorish and European folk traditions as well as reggae and Latin-infused rhythms to create a varied, modern ballet that effectively walks the line between tradition and modernity. Contemporary flair brings the audience to their feet and keeps them there. $26, 6pm Sunday, Carver Community Cultural Center, 215 N. Hackberry, (210) 207-7211, thecarver.org.
