10 Free Events Happening in San Antonio This Week

1. An Evening in Main Plaza- Tuesday, July 30

Because Tuesday is the new Friday, come out to Main Plaza and enjoy an evening filled with food trucks, live entertainment and lots of fun. From 5 to 8 p.m., parking is free at city operated parking garages, lots, and meters. If free parking isn't incentive enough to come downtown, there will be drink specials, free appetizers and more.

2. Movies By Moonlight- Tuesday, July 30

Grab your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets

oh and don’t forget the bug spray, for another free movie at Hemisfair Park. This week’s feature film, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, follows the lovable group of zoo animals who escape captivity to join a traveling circus. Pre-show entertainment begins at 7:30 and the feature film begins at 8:30 p.m.

3. HEB Free Tuesday Family Day at San Antonio Museum of Art- Tuesday, July 30

Looking for free family fun this evening? Look no further. San Antonio Museum of Art host HEB Free Tuesday Family Day: Latin American Folk Art from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Great Hall. Explore the colorful cultures and unique materials found throughout the Latin American galleries. Children can enjoy creating masks, molas, weavings and puppets.

4. Comedian Joan Riviera Comedy Show & Open Mic- Wednesday, July 31

The self-confessed “Mexican Joan Rivers” brings hilarious stand-up comedy to the Historic Bonham Exchange. Her weekly comedy show and competition fills up the Exchange every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. Join Joan and some of south Texas’ funniest people for a good laugh and no cover for those 21 and up.

5. Dave & Buster’s Presents: Summer Karaoke Nights- Wednesday, July 31

Come and be a star (or watch others be stars) at Dave & Buster’s Karaoke Wednesdays from 9 p.m. to close. Enjoy live entertainment, a diverse menu of tasty foods or, for liquid encouragement, enjoy several happy hour drinks. Did I mention it’s free?! Also, enjoy half off arcade games on Wednesdays. The showroom doors open at 8:30 for early seating.

6. Mash-Up McNay Lecture Series- Thursday, August 1

Take part in this unconventional, interactive experience and see if you can make the mash-up connection. This week’s mash-up features Paul Bolin, Art Education Professor from the University of Texas and Johnny Hernandez, chef and restaurateur. This unexpected collision fuses art, food, and prizes. 7. Hairspray Outdoor Movie Screening- Friday, August 2

Come join Slab Cinema and SA Parks & Recreation for an outdoor screening of Adam Shankman’s 2007 adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Hairspray this Friday and Saturday. Along with the toe tappin’ good music, enjoy a live dance number performed by the AVO dancers during the film and activities for the kids. The film will begin around sunset (8:30 p.m.).

8. Balcones Heights Jazz Festival- Friday, August 2

Once again, this week you can enjoy the sounds of smooth jazz at the Wonderland of the Americas Amphitheater with Balcones Heights' 20th Annual Jazz Festival. Remember to get there early and snag a place for your lawn chairs and blankets because seating is first-come-first-serve. This Friday enjoy Joseph Vincelli at 7 p.m. and Slim Man at 9 p.m.

9. Primer Sabado- Saturday August 3

Celebrate First Saturdays every month in Downtown Market Square. Enjoy local entertainment, children’s activities, arts & crafts, food and much more! This event is free and open to the public from 12 to 6 p.m.

10. Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz at Alamo Street Eat Bar- Sunday, August 4

Alamo Street Eat Bar presents a free double feature movie night including Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Audience members are encouraged to “get their zombie on” and a prize will be awarded to the best costume. So get your zombie costumes and your lawn chairs for a night out at Alamo Street Eat Bar’s double feature. One downside, no outside food or drinks are prohibited.
