While A Midsummer Night’s Dream may or may not be Shakespeare’s best comedy — shout out to all my fellow Much Ado About Nothing peeps — it has certainly, over the years, been his most beloved and oft-interpreted.

The fantastical Midsummer, a damn clinic in Shakespeare’s wit as well as his knack for misdirection and absurdity, follows the interwoven stories of Theseus and Hippolyta (Duke and Queen of Athens); Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius (four young and gullible lovers); the Mechanicals (a hilariously bumbling group of tradesmen tasked with putting on a play of their own); and Oberon, Titania and Puck (the unforgettable and mischievous woodland fairies).

Through a barrage of fumbles, false starts and trickery, the play provides a lighthearted and surreal meditation on the fickleness of love and the romanticism of fools. This weekend, the Classic Theatre opens its new season with a month-long run of the famous play in a production guest directed by Joe Goscinski.
