Wes Anderson movies exist on their own odd, idiosyncratic, maybe arcane plane. The characters are big, the drama is high, the humor is dry and the world of Anderson’s imagination is meticulously wrought in terms of sets, costumes and shots. As such, his body of work may seem tough to penetrate for the uninitiated.

In our estimation, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the venerated auteur’s fourth film, is the ideal entry point for the casual viewer looking to get into Anderson’s catalog. The zany and heartwarming tale of washed-up oceanographer Steve Zissou (played impeccably by Bill Murray) and his quest for revenge on the exotic shark that killed his partner, The Life Aquatic is a delightful and warm comedy about a man losing his edge and just sort of making it up as he goes along. The cast, most of which Anderson fans will recognize as his go-to players, also features a hilarious Jeff Goldblum, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Angelica Huston and Willem Dafoe. Catch a free screening of this 2004 gem as part of Slab Cinema’s roving Wes Fest.

Free, Thu Jun 7, 8pm, McNay Art Museum, 6000 N. New Braunfels Ave., (210) 824-5368, wesandersonfilmfestival.com.
