Amuse-BOUCHE

SA native Randy Schulze landed the grand prize — five acres of hilltop near Llano — in the Lone Star Beer Landowner’s Challenge this past weekend, beating out contestants from Houston and Schulenberg in a series of challenges that included an impromptu barbecue.

Schulze won the washer toss, although not the unexpected washer quiz that followed. In the end, though, two weeks of studying Texas history with the wife paid off. Born-’n’-raised, he knew where Whataburger (one of his favorite burger joints) first served a patty (Corpus Christi), and where Dr. Pepper (his favorite soft drink) was invented (Waco). “OK, y’all know me,” he thought when the quiz started out in his favorite territory. But LBJ’s birthplace (Stonewall) might’ve stumped him if he hadn’t prepared, he said.

“It was a lot of fun,” added Schulze. He and his wife haven’t decided what to do with their new land, which is undeveloped and “full of trees” — his sons, 9 and 11, might inherit it some day. Schulze says, sure, he feels a little more Texan with a piece of Hill Country property to his name, “But just winning the Texas trivia contest makes me feel really good.”
