Spirits were high at Ciel’s paella night last Thursday (David Shelton also unveiled his eponymous art gallery, where we highly recommend Scott Lifshutz’s devastatingly delicate watercolors; davidsheltongallery.com), but out front, a travestywas underway. The conflict between owner Damien Watel (of Bistro Vatel, Ciao Lavanderia, and La Frite fame) and the Stone Oakies over his Gilbert Duran-designed fork sculpture was resolved in favor of the latter: the fork can stay, but the restaurateur has to cloak it with a wall, which was partially constructed last week. It’ll be finished in time for an event celebrating/mourning/mocking the showdown, noon-9 p.m. Saturday, at Ciel/Ciao2, 20626 Stone Oak Parkway. “Signage,” said the Stone Oak Homeowners Association; “art” said Watel. And in a City blessed with both a weak digital-billboard law and a very gold, very tall Angel Moroni atop the nearby Mormon Temple, we’ve got to side with Watel (his way with fries and Dover sole has almost nothing to do with our sentiments).
