Fast Foodie: Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt

Discounting the occasional cold front, the weather is taking a turn for the warmer. This change in the seasons wakes up the taste buds to the fresh flavors of spring and summer and has our bodies craving cold treats — I prefer those we can enjoy guiltlessly.

Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt, located in the Village at Stone Oak shopping center on 281 North, is new to Texas as of this February. The self-serve shop features a wall of 14 flavors of frozen yogurt — including two sugar-free varieties and two dairy-free sorbets. Twelve of the flavors are also fat free.

Patrons select their cup size upon entry and the self-serve process begins: think buffet-style frozen yogurt. Among the traditional flavors are several unexpected choices that can be served alone or in combination, such as peanut butter and wild raspberry jelly. My favorite was a toss-up between the red velvet cake and New York cheesecake.

The toppings bar, located just past the wall of yogurt dispensers, lures those striving to keep their dessert healthy. Over 70 colorful, crunchy, and some very unique toppings sprawl beneath the case: fresh fruit, cereal, nuts, and an assortment of chocolate candies that rivals the diversity of a sweets shop. Aspen Leaf is owned by, and serves toppings from, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Strawberry boba balls top the list as the most captivating item, beckoning even the most discerning diners — their slightly neon-pink twist makes one think of red caviar.

Once your cup overfloweth (The honest staff warns newbies, “You’ll probably get too much if it’s your first time here”), move on down to the scales. All products are sold by weight at 42 cents per ounce. A heaping, well-overtopped cup with several flavors will run you around $5.
