Gin, vermouth, and nail polish
Does your work make you bite your nails to the quick? Then you need a drink and a manicure. On Thursday, October 6, The V Bar is unveiling Martinis and Manicures, in which manicurists from Versi Salon will perform a basic trim, file, and paint while you sip away on your cocktail. Cost is $20.
Martinis and Manicures will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month.
V Bar is located in the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, 150 E. Houston. It is open from 3 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Info: 227-9700 or hotelvalencia.com.
Food drive, not food fight
In Animal House, John Belushi’s character, Bluto stuffs his mouth with mashed potatoes and pretends to be a zit. Then he bellows: “Food fight!”
In a similar spirit, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is hollering “Food drive!” during its one-year anniversary celebration, Saturday, October 8. Animal House screens at 8:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help those affected by the recent hurricanes. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is located at 1255 SW Loop 410. Tickets are $10, which includes the movie, two drinks, an entrée, and unlimited popcorn. Info: 677-8500.
Gumbo for a good cause
When Hurricanes Rita and Katrina hit, they not only knocked out commercial establishments such as casinos and restaurants, but hurt the livelihoods of artists as well.
The Craft Emergency Relief Fund is a national organization of artists and craftspeople helping fellow artists; on Thursday, October 13, the Copper Kitchen Café at the Southwest School of Art & Craft, 300 August, will serve a Gumbo for CERF lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each bowl is $10 and all proceeds got to CERF to help rebuild the destroyed studios and small businesses run by craftspersons in areas damaged by recent hurricanes.
Sherye Foster and friends will perform zydeco music. The first 100 persons served will receive a limited-edition glass “pocket heart” by local artist Gini Garcia.
Sugar skulls and Mexican cuisine
Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine, 5800 Broadway, is showcasing Día de los Muertos altars prepared by local elementary-school students. Info: 822-6151.
