A NEW BLEND

The newest kid on the coffee block will mark its grand opening with two special events. Blend, 1502 S. Flores, features coffee, tea, live music, and art. On Friday, January 21 from 7pm-midnight, Blend will host a live DJ featuring experimental electronic tracks, also known as intelligent dance music. The festivities continue on Saturday, January 22, with live acoustic music by Magali. Blend promotes a "non-toxic" smoke- and alcohol-free environment. Though herbal tea blends and various coffee items are the present focus, management plans to add a juice bar and lunch menu down the road. Info: 299-4446.

WINE INSTITUTE

The Hotel Valencia River Walk, 150 E. Houston, and in-house restaurant Citrus will host a full day of wine events led by instructor Ken Griffin. Events include a course on wine tasting and a vintner dinner on Saturday, January 22. The course is free and limited to 30 participants. Participants will learn about and sample wines from Australia, New Zealand, and California. Citrus restaurant hosts the dinner featuring Australian wines and a six-course menu. $80. Info: 230-8412.

JANUARY ART OPENING

Silo, 1133 Austin Highway, hosts its quarterly art opening with an artists' reception on Thursday, January 20 from 6:30-8pm. Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served at the reception with live music by Beverly Houston & Breezin'. Artists include featured painter Carla Velez, painters Ronnie Camp and Teri Wright, photographer Dana Fossett, and sculptor Billy Allen. Through April 15. Info: 824-8686.

HANDS-ON PASTA

Learn how to make your own pasta with Chef Mary Martini. Participants will learn how to make, roll, cut, and cook pasta in a flash. Part of the January cooking school classes held at Central Market, 4821 Broadway, the pasta class will be held Saturday, January 22 from 11am-1:30pm. The menu includes Fresh Pasta with Amatriciana Sauce; Ravioli filled with Spinach & Ricotta in Tomato Basil Sauce; and Lasagna with Roasted Vegetables & Fontina. $45. Info: 368-8617
