Check out the devastatingly awesome concept behind my new favorite film I’ve never seen: Santo en la venganza de las mujeres vampiro (Santo in the Revenge of the Vampire Women), in which some bloodthirsty vamps seek vengeance on the man who tried to destroy them by attacking his descendant — Santo, the silver-masked luchador. Before Hollywood cranks out the inevitable gringo-ized version starring Randy “Macho Man” Savage, see the original (for free, no less) Saturday, September 13, at the Museo Alameda (101 S. Santa Rosa, thealameda.org). The showing is the first in the Museo’s fall film series, to be followed Saturday, September 27, with Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Fando y Lis, which is sadly luchador-less but did cause riots upon its release at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival, and spawned rumors that Jodorowsky is an actual vampire.
In other horror news, this year’s Horrific Film Fest (horrificfilmfest.com) announced winners, honoring the work of two Texans: Austinite James Christopher’s Scorned took home Best Effects, and Huntsvillain George H. Russell’s performance in Long Pig earned him Best Actor. Russell’s brutal slasher will also be the subject of next week’s Cinema Obscura, so stay tuned.
