DT Buffkin’s voice sounds like something you’d hear floating through the speakers from one of your grandpa’s dusty old records. His overall vintage sound isn’t something unfamiliar to San Antonio’s ever-expanding music scene though. Years before the release of his 2013 LP Tattooed Rose all the way up to this past April’s Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, Buffkin has been charming his audiences across San Antonio with Merle Haggard-influenced crooning.
The first video to emerge from Saturday Night, Sunday Morning is for the track “Doin’ Life,” the fifth song off the album. Shot and edited by Kevin Barton and directed by Nic Long of Lonely Horse (along with Buffkin), the video follows indie-pop artist and queer San Antonio persona Wayne Holtz waking up and sort of just going about his day – showering, putting clothes on, etc.
Holtz, dressed up as a dapper Texan somebody, carries a briefcase through a neighborhood making brief encounters with Buffkin and other folk, including Buffkin's own son Shenandoah (Holtz holding baby Shenandoah is some seriously cute ass shit). Buffkin and Holtz kick it briefly in a very Texan "how-ya-been-where-ya-goin'-sorta way.
Holtz ends up at a bar, shows a briefcase to what seems like the owner (its contents undisclosed), and then proceeds to perform a strip-tease on a pole. It’s such a contrast to the song’s vibe but makes sense in the most amazing and unexpected way, like when vampires show up in FromDusk 'til Dawn and you're like "wait, what the fuck."
“Oh my god, Wayne was so professional,” Buffkin told the Current. “We didn’t even have to do multiple takes, because he was killing it every time. He’s not self-conscious like I would’ve been. He didn’t have to get drunk like I probably would’ve had to do.”
Though Buffkin didn’t want to reveal what was actually in the suitcase (money? drugs? dildos?), he did express an interest with working with Holtz again in the future.
