Pujol is a four-piece project based out of Nashville, Tennessee headed by musician, Daniel Pujol, who has been writing, producing, performing, and delivering a wild amalgamation of garage, punk, and abstract spoken word since a string of singles, EPs, and albums dating back to 2009— the newest of which being his digital single, "Stinky Toy."
Having debuted in May of this year, it’s a track that dives far away from Pujol’s familiar penchant for rock oriented structures by embarking on a dystopic, dark, absurdist, and abstract piece backed by dissonant guitar swells and eerily primitive percussion. The lyrics explore everything from employment and technology to social media, cellphone culture, and the collective relation of all the aforementioned ideas through the one’s identity, or lack thereof.
It explores what seems like the impossible dream for many of deleting all social media profiles, tossing the phone into the garbage, and retreating by Megabus (because of course) to somewhere far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the labor force, and the digital imprint that invariably follow in pursuit of a simpler life of anonymity.
While different, this exploration of the spoken word in his music is not necessarily a new move as his 2015 release called "Kisses," rounding out at eight tracks and debuted through Bartertown Co-Cop, begins with a with flanged, warbly, and pitched down voice engaging in a haunting, but still goofy, summoning of sorts before launching into a punchy little garage rock ditty called "Sleepy Doni."
Pujol's live performance certainly emphasizes the latter, keying its presentation around upbeat, wild, and fun rock numbers sure to engage a crowd. Yet amid all the fuzz, distortion, solos, and power chords, one can certainly expect to pick up on some lyrical truths nestled right into the music, no matter how cheeky they may be.
