Lisa Frank nostalgia
Punk grrrls Lisa Frank recently declared an indefinite hiatus. We heard the news after an especially rad set opening for Japanther a couple weeks ago, so it seemed particularly jarring a band would take a break right as things were gelling like a Bic pen. At any rate, they played their last show for some time September 22 with friends Jeff the Brotherhood. We are super-bummed. The band, apparently, is super-busy, curing cancer, aiding Pakistani flood victims, or whatever is more important than representing femalekind on San Antonio’s male-dominated stages. How are we going to “Fuck, Luv, Eat Pizza,” now?
Mexicans with Guns’ spooky Halloween surprise
No, it’s not a glock in your face, gringo. Just a glow-in-the-dark record! Yippee! Electro-maestro Ernest Gonzales (Mexicans with Guns) confirmed his latest effort is an amicable split entitled Friends of Friends vol. 3, out on Friends of Friends Music (“It’s not too creative of a title,” said Gonzales), with pal Robot Kotch, producer for Berliner blip-hop/raga trio Jahcoozi. Each artist gets three songs, and the pair recruited Free the Robots (California psychedelic), Salva (San Francisco funk), Mux Mool (Brooklyn Big Beat), Alex B (Denver experimental hip-hop) King Cannibal (London Drum and Bass) and Lunice (Montreal experimental rap) for remixes. But the international alliances brought one small hitch: one of the remixes contained a miniscule sample from B-movie classic Planet 9 from Outer Space. Though the artists involved believe the film’s audio is now in the public domain, their vinyl pressing company wasn’t convinced and held up production, originally slated for an October 5 release. You can still get Friends of Friends vol. 3 on iTunes on that day, but the magical glow-in-the-dark discs won’t spin into public until later this month, hopefully in time to light up some Halloween parties. In the meantime, Gonzales is pressing a limited run of 100 no-glow vinyl records for his Friday night album release party with Neilyo, Dayta, and Butcher Bear (The Limelight, 2718 N St. Marys, thelimelightsa.com).
