English idioms are unique: it's users can say "Healthcare for America's 47-million uninsured costs an arm and a leg." In the Spanish idiom, it's "The uninsured pay an eye out of their face (cuesta un ojo de la cara)." Cover Illustration by Chuck Kerr.

Draw it like it is

Jeremy Martin’s comic book review of Army@Love `Straight Shooter, May 9-15` hits our empire’s propaganda nail on its covert head. His insight into the realities of our military personnel (“disadvantaged teens or misguided patriots”) shows up Memorial Day/Veterans Day rhetoric for what it is: We make them victims and call them heroes.

Replay

I just didn’t see anything creative, just layering of digital graphics with no streaming change and static video inserts. Please don’t tell me there’s a message.

There is creativity in this piece! The simplist of compositions can be the most compelling. I agree with the video inserts being static but there is movement within those windows. There is also movement going on behind the “static videos”. That being said, if those video inserts moved too, it would be too much. The video inserts also pop up one at a time giving the viewers a reason to stay engaged with the piece. The audio also helps with this. As for a message, does it really need one? The message to me is that the artist is experimenting with a new way to interpret and convey her idea of underwater life in a new and non-traditional media that is aesthetically pleasing. The curator at SAMA obviously liked it :)

What a terrific “birds-eye view” Mr. Robinson has given us. Such clarity of information is rarely seen in the news media these days ... let’s hear more from Chuck.
