For their seventh album, environmentally conscious chamber popsters Cloud Cult blasts off on a galactic mission in 16 songs, perhaps a euphemism for the birth of Cloud Cult founder Craig Minowa’s second child. His first son died unexpectedly, fueling hundreds of lyrics in the early 2000s, so it’s nice to hear such positive inspiration in an album filled with invocations, blessings, and promises of protection. In fact, this could and should be the soundtrack for every young, indie-rocking parent out there. For those who haven’t spawned, Light Chasers provides plenty of other revelatory material. Have fun zipping from an orchestral opener into prog-rock on “Today We Give Ourselves to the Fire,” to the oddly right-on combo of acoustic guitar and autotune of “The Exploding People,” and on to the punk rock “Room Full of People in Your Head.” All the while Minowa subtly directs the journey toward a transcendental celebration, exhorting us to “le`ave` our cubicles in little flaming piles” and realize “it is what it is, you are what you are, just try to enjoy your day.”
