Inmates in local jails are just as outraged as the general public toward the family members accused of taking part in King Jay Davila's staged kidnapping.
According to reports, the women charged with tampering with evidence in the case of the dead child have received varying amounts of aggression while in custody.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said Angie Torres, cousin to King Jay's father Christopher Davila, was assaulted by three inmates while in the bathroom. The attack took place January 9, a day before Davila led authorities to the site where's accused of burying a backpack with his son's body inside.
Authorities did not disclose the extent of Torres' injuries.
Following the attack, Torres was placed in protective custody. She was previously offered protection due to the attention the child's death received, but she declined.
The three inmates accused of assaulting Torres are under investigation but have not been formally charged.
Torres has been in custody since January 7, when she was arrested on an unrelated robbery charge. The day after she was booked, police identified her as the person seen driving off from a West Side convenience store in Davila's vehicle. Authorities say she participated in a staged kidnapping that Davila planned with Torres and his mother Beatrice Sampayo.
Sampayo, meanwhile, faced a less-serious assault. An inmate told authorities that she spat on Sampayo as the woman was being escorted from her cell to the jail's infirmary on January 11.
Sampayo declined to press charges against the inmate. She's been in protective custody since being booked and has spent much of her time in the infirmary due to a medical condition.
Davila is also in protective custody, though he was first placed in administrative segregation due to his gang affiliation. All inmates held under protective custody are escorted by a deputy when moving location to location within the facility. They're also kept in isolation 23 hours a day and allowed only an hour to bathe, make a phone call and go to the day room, according to the sheriff's office.
Davila is currently being held on a $1.25 million bond. Torres' bail is $300,000, while Sampayo's is $250,000.
Court dates have not been set at this time.
