While the St. Mary’s Strip continues its renaissance (don’t call it a comeback) as the live music epicenter of San Anto’s scene, some of the newer (or revamped) establishments have stolen a bit of thunder from Hi-Tones, which continues to put on excellent shows stacked with diverse touring acts as well as swell local talent. Case in point: You won’t want to miss Monday’s hot bill of rock. The show’s headliner, Mark Sultan — aka BBQ of The King Khan & BBQ show, also in Almighty Defenders with The Black Lips — got his start as a youngster in Montreal, playing 1960s-inspired garage-rock/doo-wop (with something of a punk spirit) in numerous bands. He’s since worked quite a bit as a one-man band, churning out soulful and delightfully messy rock ’n’ roll under the BBQ moniker and now under his government name. Meanwhile, the local support for Sultan’s garage-rock clinic just couldn’t be any better. Arrive early to catch The Bolos, serving up a blistering and boisterous brand of blues-rock, and relative newcomer Topo Chica, charming listeners with poppy/sloppy dream-punk vibes.
