Monterey Team Launches SAMA Pop-Up Tuesday, June 17

Wild Beast is coming to SAMA.

I'm not sure our mouths are ready for what's about to go down at the San Antonio Museum of Art. If you needed another reason to check out "Matisse: Life in Color," the team behind The Monterey will launch a pop-up restaurant at the former Cafe de Artistes inside SAMA. Wild Beast, will operate in conjunction with the collection of Henri Matisse's works which runs June 14 through September 14. The opening is set for Tuesday, June 17.

The name stems from Les Fauves, or wild beasts, a name given to Matisse and his buddies by an art critic who described the work as "boldly colored, thickly textured" as opposed to their earlier, tamer work.

The menu, designed in part by chefs Mark Martinez (Barbaro) and Jenn Dobbertin (Hot Joy) will reflect the period with "simple and spontaneous with big flavors" and "ever-changing," according to Chad Carey, member of Empty Stomachs restaurant group which owns The Monty. Expect to find small plates, hot and cold soups, four to six sammies that exemplify the theme and Bakery Lorraine pastries specific to Wild Beast. Bonus! Wild Beast will serve up doughnuts on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Wild Beast will open for breakfast and lunch daily Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with reservation-only prix fixe dinner served Fridays and Saturdays nights inside the Hops Building overlooking the San Antonio River. Email [email protected] for reservations.
