As part of the San Antonio Music Awards issue that hits stands tomorrow, the Current presents 10 shows up, down and around the North St. Mary's strip. With a $5 ticket allowing access to every gig, the bar-hopping opportunities could become daunting. So all this week, we're providing a guide and set times for each venue, starting with Faust (517 E Woodlawn) and working our way down to The Korova.
With a floor plan smaller than most SA apartments, expect a house party at Faust's garage rock residency. Opening the evening at 10 p.m., Garrett T. Capps begins with his manic one-man band. Stomping on a floor tom, sweating up a storm, Capps writes heavyweight rock 'n' roll with a whiskey-tang of Americana. On the stuff from his 2012 EPs The Only Hipster and Radical Sabbatical, it's more like a double shot of the heavy proof.
After Capps gets cleaned up — I petitioned my boss to buy one of those NBA sweat-mops — San Antonio quintet Wild Blood takes over with the material from their self-titled debut. Released in July, it's one of the best releases from the 210 in 2015. With a sweet, sweet pause in the drum fill, Wild Blood's "Preacher Preach" might be the best five minutes of San Antonio music this year.
The Bolos take the stage at 1 a.m, the hour at which these bon vivants really start to wake up. For the quartet's summer tour, the band was trying to line up a limo to take their blues-punk tunes to California. Though the idea fell through, that's pretty much the most rock 'n' roll thing I've heard in a long time.
