News and notes from the San Antonio theater scene
Our local theater-support organizations are planning a particularly supportive September. The San Antonio Theatre Coalition opens the month with its second-annual theatreASAP event, designed to showcase the diversity and talent of the local theater community by challenging them to come together to write, rehearse, and perform 6 short plays in 24 hours. Playwrights will gather at a wine and cheese reception (free and open to the public) at San Pedro Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 9, to receive their writing assignments. The scripts must be turned in by 6 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, and at 8 a.m. directors and actors (chosen in auditions that emphasized their ability to memorize quickly, held at Trinity University on August 21) will gather at Magik Theatre to be assembled into casts and begin rehearsals.
At 8 p.m. that evening, the show must go on. Tickets are $10 for SATCO members, $15 for non-members, and are available by calling the Magik box office at 227-2751. The show sold out last year, so call ahead! On Sunday, the Cove will host the after-party, with music by True Stories, from 5-7 p.m. Make a weekend of it, and watch theater being made and celebrated in fast and furious mode.
At 5 p.m. on Monday, September 12, SATCO will host the first event in its new educational meeting series. The organization, which has historically held open meetings on the second Monday of every month, recently restructured the meeting calendar to make every second month's meeting a special program or discussion of interest to the local theater community. The series will kick off with an exclusive tour of the McNay Art Museum's Tobin Theater Collection, led by Curator Jody Blake, who will also discuss the ways in which the collection serves as a resource for local actors, directors, designers, and producers. The McNay will provide light refreshments. Admission is free to SATCO members and non-members will be charged $5, with the proceeds going to the McNay.

On September 25, the Alamo Theatre Arts Council presents its 15th-annual Globe Awards Gala, recognizing excellence in local theater in the 2004-05 season, at McAllister Auditorium on the San Antonio College campus.
