In addition to providing preventative health services and serving as a “one-stop shop for individuals with immediate basic needs,” the nonprofit
Martinez Street Women’s Center makes a positive impact through
Girl Zone — a free empowerment program geared for elementary and middle school students who lack opportunities “simply because of the zip code that they live in.” Presented as an opportunity for Girl Zone summer campers to “get engaged and entwined in the fabric of their community,” the group exhibit “Girl’s Eye View” tasked participants with capturing the essence of San Antonio’s East Side through photography, film and poetry. As Girl Zone summer camp art director, Ernesto Olivo sees the project as “a way to amplify where they are coming from, what they are going through and how they are seeing that growth within themselves here in this community.”
