Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs wasn’t technically the world’s first animated feature when it premiered in 1937, but this frightening full-color fairy tale was the first full-length cartoon most audiences had ever seen and it was, as we now say, a game changer. Painted in rich Technicolor and peppered with instant classic songs like “Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho” and “Someday My Prince Will Come,” the film proved Walt Disney’s faith in animation as art for the masses.

Aside from cute dwarfs and animal friends and happy endings for princesses, the story showcases the moments of darkness, desolation and sheer terror that were part and parcel of early Disney cartoon features — courtesy of evil queens, magic mirrors, and witches with poisoned apples. Texas Public Radio screens the gem as part of its Cinema Tuesdays summer series.
