That hip-hop and Christianity, at least the mainstream versions of each, seem to be incompatible probably has more to do with our preconceived notions of each than anything else. Indeed, humility, forgiveness and compassion seem opposed to the core hip-hop tropes of claiming superiority, glorifying violence and disrespecting enemies (and others). But, as a vehicle for expression, hip-hop is endlessly malleable and empowering, just like any decent practice of Christianity.
Whether you’re a Christian looking to expand your musical horizons or a hip-hop head with an open mind – recognizing that flow is flow – this weekend’s Christian hip-hop bill at the Aztec could prove a powerful experience. This special show, boasting some of the brightest of the sub-genre, will feature performances by Lecrae, Andy Mineo, WHATUPRG, nobigdyl and Wordsplayed.
$25, Fri Oct. 12, 6:30pm, Aztec Theatre, 104 N. St. Mary’s St., (210) 812-4355, theaztectheatre.com.
