As far as acts of customer appreciation go, you'd be hard pressed to find one as righteous as Paper Tiger's Free Week. For this event, held for the first time back in early January, the venue, easily the city's best for touring shows of the indie anything variety, presented hours upon hours of performances from a veritable who's who (and then some) in local music of all genres. All, of course, on the house.

The whole affair was swell not just for its price and sheer scope, but for its focus on celebrating local musical acts.

Well, since they love us so much, Paper Tiger is at it again with Free Week Summer Camp (July 21-22), a miniature version of the week-long event that, nevertheless, packs quite a wallop.

If you follow the local music scene closely, then you probably already have your heart set on catching a bunch of these excellent acts. But, for the uninitiated, the 40-plus act lineup probably seems a bit daunting. Suffice it so say you should see everyone you can.

We are especially looking forward to catching rising r&b gem Amea, pop-punk/grunge outfit Vetter Kids (which hasn't been playing much lately), Chris Maddin's electro-singer-songwriter act FILMSTRIPS, sludgy punk-pop newcomer Gutterflowers, intricate and soulful indie rock crew fishermen, mutant noise-pop tribe Filthy, wildly experimental noise group Blacknail, and apocalyptic cumbia dynamo Grupo Frackaso. But, with this type of show, there's as much joy in discovering something new to love as in quenching your thirst for your favorite local performers. (Full disclosure: Current music writer Chris Conde will be performing a characteristically leftfield hip-hop set at this event.)

See here for the full lineup and other pertinent details.

Since Paper Tiger is showing us such love by hosting such an extensive, well-chosen bill of fine local sounds, we recommend you get in on the love fest too and lend these San Anto artists (new and familiar) your attention.
