Taco Land as ice house with Billy Bob Thornton strumming madly in the corner? That was the essence of a recent Facebook post at Keep San Antonio Lame backed by “several reliable sources.” The “semi-official if not fully confirmed” scoop suggested that developer David M. Adelman and actor Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives) own the old Taco Land property (true), and that it was “entirely possible but not confirmed” that the venue would reopen in December 2011 or January 2012 as “The Grayson St. Ice House” with Billy Bob Thornton’s band booked as the inaugural act. The lead was specific enough to prompt Sound & Fury to track down David Reyes, Chavira’s publicist, who said that while Chavira is a member of the company that owns the property (Taco Land Studios, LLC), all that ice-house business isn’t true.
“The property has not been leased out to anybody, and there are no plans to open the so-called Grayson St. Ice House,” Reyes said Monday during a phone interview. “I don’t know where that came from.” But is it possible there had been talks about this, and that’s where the rumors started? “No, I’ve never heard anything, and Ricardo hasn’t either,” he said. “It’s just a very interesting property and people like to talk. But everything’s in the air right now.”
With everything in the air, can anything be nailed down? In time, perhaps, we’ll know.
On less nebulous footing: Tim and Candyce Slusher have been hosting Riff House Concerts since 2009. The height of intimacy: the live music nights are held in the couple’s living room. Meanwhile, the Houston-based The Liquid Kitchen, a band that wants to put “the David Lee Roth back into rock and roll,” will be at Nightrocker on May 28 (10 p.m., doors at 8 p.m., 18 and over, $5-$10). While I’m not sure David Lee Roth is exactly what we need right now, I do dig the band’s sound and shameless self-promotion. They’re absolutely convinced they’re the greatest thing since Zep and their website says they have a singer “with the looks to make panties in the house wet” and a lead guitarist from Brazil who is “the envy of players all around.” We’ll see.
