San Antonio just reached "bitchin'" on the cool-o-meter.
In the 21st century, nerdiness is no longer banished to basements, as it's now socially acceptable with the "cool" kids who would've given you swirlies at the mere mention of Dungeons & Dragons in previous decades. To celebrate rising and timeless fandoms, conventions are popping up faster than reboots of action-packed '80s cartoons (bring it on, gritty, R-rated ThunderCats).
In its fourth year, SciFest is going down July 9-10 at Wonderland of the Americas Mall. Did we mention that the two-day event is completely free?
Expect a wide variety of cosplay that reaches to every popular fandom, from Star Wars to Batman. And maybe there'll be a few obscure costumes in the mix, like a toxic-wasted Captain Planet or the-soon-to-be-rebooted He-Man and She-Ra. If you feel that your costume conquers all, the adult costume contest is Saturday evening and children can also compete Sunday afternoon.
SciFest is also hosting a meet-and-greet with pretty much the biggest superstars ever, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So bring pizza and a camera.
In addition to imaginative cosplay and costumes, over 100 vendors and artist will be selling their wares, from unique jewelry and rare comic books all the way to handmade artwork.
SciFest, although smaller than Alamo City Comic-Con and San Japan, is a perfect (and free) way to cut your teeth on the summer convention season.
