For those of you surprised to see an alt weekly touting a bona fide mainstream country music queen, well, in the words of the young Texan songstress, "step off." I've been listening to Musgraves' Grammy-winning major label debut Same Trailer, Different Park non-stop while writing an article in advance of her San Antonio rodeo performance on Wednesday, and, unlike most Nashville pop glop, I find almost every song to be a joy (here I bravely join every. other. music. journalist.)

Tonight, she'll appear on Austin City Limits (11pm KLRN) with Dale motherfucking Watson. From the early videos, it looks to be a barn-burner in the best sense.
Here's Musgraves singing "Stupid," which starts strong with the ominous line "Plays you like a fiddle, shakes you like a rattle, takes away your gun and send you into battle," and never really slows down.

Here's a sweet rendition of "Step Off" (didn't make the final ACL cut) in which Musgraves and her quick-thinking backing band nullify the negativity by bursting into Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds."
