Serving as a stopgap between last year’s excellent Nashville Fires and an in-the-works full-length slated for early next year, the Feathered Fortress title seems to indicate a fairly lightweight affair. But the power-pop four-piece throws that impression right out on the strength of the killer opener “Hurricane.” It’s a track as instantly gratifying as anything Phonolux has ever produced, anchored by propulsive piano and featuring a killer guitar charge at the end. Fortress’ remaining five tracks don’t quite come on with such a rush, but there’s plenty more substance to be found, particularly on the cleverly twisting “Goodbye.”
