Few local bands have made the impact that Girl in a Coma did. And whether folks here realize it or not, dealing with the boys’ club that is the music industry, combined with overcoming the still-problematic machismo culture that exists in San Antonio, that impact goes beyond the music itself.

From touring with the likes of Morrissey, Social Distortion and Tegan and Sara, to building a cult-like following in the U.S. and abroad, Phanie Diaz, Nina Diaz and Jenn Alva broke through the glass ceiling that most local acts run into and kept pushing higher. Even before the band broke up this past year, Nina Diaz found her voice as soloist and showed a more mature, independent edge, all while remaining humble and true to her roots. Harnessing pop sensibilities and molded by rock roots, Nina Diaz’s sound is something we didn’t realize we needed until we heard it.

The recent L.A. transplant returns home for a special show at Limelight that’s sure to be amazing.

$8-$12, Thu Jan. 10, 7pm, Limelight, 2718 N. St. Mary’s St., thelimelightsa.com.
