Our Lady of the Lake University's International Folk Culture Center will once again be hosting their house concert series. Focusing on the vast categories of music that fall under the umbrella of Southwest music – music from where we come from – the center begins its new series on January 29, 2016.
Once an alive and vibrant series in the '90s – which hosted such talents as Sara Hickman, Tish Hinojosa, Willis Allan Ramsey and Slaid Cleaves, to name a few – the concert series will be revived. Kicking things off will be none other than Arizona-born, San Antonio-based bilingual artists, Sisters Morales.
Fluent in both Spanish and English, the Morales sisters will be the first in a series highlighting artists that work within the genres of mariachi music and ranchera songs, beginning on Friday, January 29 at 8pm. Tickets are $20 pre-paid or $25 at the door and will be held in the Thiry Auditorium located at 411 S. 24th St. Tickets can be purchased here, or at the box office.
The IFCC is a meeting ground for many ethnic dance troupes as well as singers and folk artists, including the San Antonio Contra Dancers, World Dance of the People, Bluebonnet Scottish Country Dancers, Scottish Highland Dancers, Ukrainians of San Antonio and many other fascinating groups.
The aim of the center is to preserve and disseminate the histories and arts of the peoples that make up our region, a political act in this day and age as we are frequently encouraged to disrobe our ancestral culture and heritage in an attempt to be "Americanized," or, conform to the dominant narrative of what American culture is: hot dogs, baseball, fireworks ... materialism ... war?
