Floore’s Country Store seems to have become Los Lobos’ Bexar County concert destination of choice in recent years, and the mighty band from East L.A. will drop by everyone’s favorite Helotes roots-music venue on Friday, September 15. The gig, with supporting act James McMurtry, coincides with the release of the Wolves’ fine new album, The Town and the City, a work that combines some of the sonic boldness of their breakthrough 1992 album, Kiko, with a subtle but thematic look at the immigrant experience. MULDOON'S FAREWELL
The Sanctuary was the place to be on Friday, September 8, as Muldoon, one of San Antonio’s most adroit and industrious rock bands, played its final show.
Yoshimoto, Not the Government, Gazelles, This Will Destroy You, and Dignan signed on for a stellar sendoff. Bolstering this exceptional lineup, the place brimmed with kids eager to see Muldoon saturate the stage with their inimitable fervor one last time, poised and proficient.
They fattened the crowd with victuals from their recent release, A Coat of Arms, watching the fans easily conjure the words from memory. In its exploration of memory and evolution, “Je Suis Un Espion” balanced the light-hearted, tactile timbre of “Great Guns Alaska 1997,” and “God and Meteorology” delivered the requisite tenacity and fear.
Thankfully closing with their opus, “Here’s to Going!,” the band allowed themselves a level of release that seemed to be infused with the freedom and sadness of finality. With some help from a couple of boys from Dignan, “Here’s to Going!” was a satisfying summation of Muldoon’s too-short, but creative, history.
